How big should a dining table be?
Share

The dining table is where a 4-room HDB flat actually lives — meals, homework, work-from-home, the occasional reunion dinner. But the dining zone in most 4-room flats is part of a shared living-dining strip, so the table has to earn its footprint. Here's how to choose one that seats your family comfortably without swallowing the room.
Start with your dining zone, not the table
For example, 4-room HDB flats run roughly 90–110 sqm, with the living and dining areas sharing one front-to-back space. Measure your dining zone and mark the table's footprint on the floor with tape. The golden rule: leave about 90–100cm of clearance on every side you'll use, so chairs can pull out and people can walk past a seated diner.
How many seats do you really need?
Match the table length to your household, using roughly 60cm of table width per person:
- Seats 4: a rectangular table around 120cm, or a round table of 90–100cm.
- Seats 6: a rectangular table around 150–180cm, or a round table of 120–150cm.
For most 4-room flats, a 120–150cm table is the practical sweet spot — enough for daily meals and the occasional guest, without blocking the walkway to the kitchen or balcony.
Rectangular, round or extendable?
- Rectangular: the most space-efficient against a wall and the easiest to seat 6.
- Round: softens a tight corner, has no sharp edges (great with young kids), and makes conversation easy — but eats more floor space per seat.
- Extendable: the smart HDB choice — compact for everyday use, extended when family visits. Our Rin Extendable Dining Table is designed exactly for this.
Why the tabletop material matters in Singapore
Dining tables here take a beating: hot claypots, curry splashes, humidity, and years of daily use. That's why we build our tables from sintered stone — an ultra-durable surface that is heat-resistant, scratch- and stain-resistant, effortless to wipe clean, and humidity-proof (unlike solid wood, it won't warp in our climate).
Tables we'd recommend for a 4-room HDB
From the Loft & Living dining table collection:
- Nara & Kanso: warm, minimalist tables that suit a 4- to 6-seat dining zone.
- Rin Extendable: everyday-compact, party-ready — ideal when space is tight but you still host.
- Montclair & Oakridge: statement stone tops for families who want the dining area to be the centrepiece.
The bottom line
Measure your dining zone, leave 90cm of clearance, and pick a 120–150cm table (or an extendable one) in an easy-care sintered stone finish. That's the formula for a 4-room HDB dining table that works for daily life and looks great doing it.
